20 New Year’s Resolutions for a Better You

new year's resolution ideas

It’s that time of year again – the holidays are right around the corner, and the new year will arrive before we know it. I know most of us might not start thinking about resolutions until the week before the new year, but brainstorming ideas early is never a bad idea! In this post, I want to give you 20 New Year’s resolution ideas focused on personal growth.

I’ve organized the post into 3 sections: Mindset and Reflection,  Learning and Creativity, and Relationships and Purpose. Each section will list related ideas; happy reading, and I hope you find a New Year’s Resolution idea you like!

Mindset and Reflection

1. Start a journaling habit

Journaling is a great way to track your growth and practice reflection. It’s also a powerful tool for practicing gratitude. I used to keep a gratitude journal where I’d write down a few things I was thankful for every morning, and it made a huge difference in my mental health. Journaling also has scientifically proven benefits, such as reducing anxiety and depression while boosting mindfulness and creativity. Try journaling on pen and paper or keeping a digital journal on your computer.

2. Define your personal values

Ask yourself: What do I truly value? Write down your top 2 values — things like freedom, creativity, or growth — and use them to guide your decisions for the new year. Define success for yourself and prioritize working on projects that align with what’s important to you.

3. Practice mindfulness or meditation

The new year is a good time to slow down and incorporate mindfulness. You don’t have to become a monk or anything; it can be taking 2 minutes in the morning to close your eyes and take deep breaths before heading out to work. Or going on a walk and paying attention to the sensation of the breeze on your skin, or the changing colors of the foliage.

4. Develop a growth mindset

The growth mindset is the belief that you can improve your abilities through hard work and constant learning. Building a growth mindset can also turn challenges into learning opportunities, and is a powerful tool for anyone looking to maximize their potential.

5. Limit social media consumption

This is a New Year’s resolution I think everyone should have. It’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of technology these days. While social media can be entertaining and inspiring, consuming too much can drain our energy and distort our sense of reality. Try setting boundaries around Instagram and Facebook, or downloading apps that block distractions.

Discipline & Habits

6. Build a consistent morning routine

Waking up is a struggle in the winter months, and starting the day can be even harder after you get out of bed. Create a morning routine that helps you start the day strong—routines are important because they give us a sense of familiarity and reduce the friction of doing things that might otherwise be difficult.

7. Set a “no snooze” rule

It might sound small, but refusing to hit snooze is a powerful act of self-discipline. Each morning, when you get up on the first alarm, you’re building discipline and proving to yourself that you can do hard things — even when you don’t feel like it.

8. Commit to movement daily

We all know exercise is good for us—use the momentum of the new year to start building good habits around movement. You don’t have to commit to a gym membership or run every day; it can be as simple as walking around the neighborhood every day or taking the stairs instead of the elevator at work.

9. Read 12 books this year

Reading is a great way to entertain yourself without social media. It’s proven to reduce stress and anxiety while improving creativity and analytical skills. Consider starting a book club if you want to read with friends; my friends and I started a book club this year, which really helped me read more.

10. Celebrate small wins weekly

We often get so caught up in achieving large goals that we forget to keep track of our progress. This year, remember to celebrate your small wins—whether it’s losing your first couple of pounds in your weight loss journey or shaving a few seconds off your mile time. Progress is progress!

Learning and Creativity

11. Pursue a new hobby

Pick something you’ve always wanted to learn — whether it’s photography, climbing, cooking, or playing guitar, and go for it! Don’t worry about success or progress and focus on the joy of learning something new.

12. Take a class that challenges you

Sign up for a class or workshop that pushes you out of your comfort zone — it could be a course in public speaking, cooking, or financial literacy. Get creative and expand your skill set!

13. Create something for yourself

We often consume endlessly but rarely create. Write, paint, record, or build something simply for yourself — not for perfection, but for expression. Find inspiration and let it carry you into creating something meaningful this year.

14. Learn a new language

Expand your worldview and try learning a new language; this can be a fun way to engage with different cultures. There’s a bunch of online platforms you can choose from to practice with tutors—I’ve used italki in the past and enjoyed working with their tutors.

15. Declutter your environment

Take some time to go through your things and see what you can donate or get rid of. Organizing your physical space can also free up mental space as well, giving you clarity to focus on the important things in your life.

Relationships and Purpose

16. Reach out to one old friend each month

Maintaining friendships in adulthood isn’t easy — it takes intention and effort. Even when we try our best, life often gets in the way. People move, start new jobs, or build families, and friendships can fade into the background. This year, make it a point to reach out to someone you haven’t seen in a while. Committing to this New Year’s resolution could lead to rekindling an old friendship!

17. Practice active listening

How often do you find yourself thinking about what to say next when you’re listening to someone? Instead of rehearsing your response, try being fully present when others speak. Listen to what someone is saying and also take in their body language, their micro-expressions—try to really understand where they’re coming from.

18. Volunteer or give back

Take some time this year to give back to your community. Volunteer at a local animal shelter, soup kitchen, or senior center — anywhere your time and energy can make a difference. It’s a meaningful way to step outside your routine, connect with others, and bring a little warmth to the colder months.

19. Practice saying “no”

Do you ever agree to do something you didn’t want to do? I know I’m guilty of this, especially in my relationship. Being a “people-pleaser” can be natural for many of us, but always being agreeable isn’t sustainable. Saying “no” is a powerful way of setting a boundary and practicing self-respect.

20. Choose your route less taken

Make a bold decision this year that is out of the norm! Want to quit your job to pursue singing? Do it. That road trip you and your best friend have been talking about for years? Go for it. Whatever it is, be brave and travel the route less taken—because life is short and you won’t regret it.

And there it is—20 New Year’s resolution ideas for a better you! Hopefully, one of these ideas has inspired you. Let me know in the comments if you enjoyed this post and, as always, feel free to reach out if you have any questions!
